Global Justice is Not a "Nebulous Thing"

I was illegally arrested and imprisoned for 23 hours, together with hundreds of peaceful protesters and at least a dozen innocent bystanders of which I was one. As a consultant to the World Bank, a citizen of a developing country, and a person who has committed his life to the work of development I was appalled by the conduct of the police and by the way the
"system" works. As a consequence, I am now far more sympathetic with the demands of the protesters and just a tad more cynical about the "establishment."

Moblization for Global Justice declare the weekend demonstrations against the World Bank and IMF a victory in bringing the public spotlight on their policies. "What is new, what is really new," the speakers at the press conference told us, "is that people in the North, especially in the United States, have finally seen what is
happening to their brothers and sisters in the Global South, the so-called 'Third World.'" Video clips to be up-loaded in next few days.

A17: 45 seconds of video of the large march from the Ellipse as it came down I St. stopping at 20th and Pennsylvania. Hours later, hundreds of protesters were arrested for refusing to leave the area. The marchers are chanting "More World, Less Bank." Although police violently attacked many small groups, they still couldn't stop our determination to
assemble a full-on puppet parade. Protests continue.

Saturday in the Shaw area of DC, nine activists were dragged down from the roof of a house that had been left empty and unused by the city for some time. Supporters on the ground stood on the steps to keep police from entering the building but were forced to move a block away by cops in full riot gear. The activists were drawing
attention to housing and eviction issues and had planned to open the space to the community and homeless. They were kept in jail and denied most of their legal rights, such as the right to legal counsel and drinking water. All nine have since been released.
