Biography and Background
Over half of all living Nobel prize winners signed a Warning to
Humanity in 1992 and 58 World Academics of Science released a document in
1994 suggesting that humankind is embarked on an uprecedented and
catastrophic path of destroying the very support systems of life.
Population growth, overconsumption, inappropriate technological
application and economic expansion are changing the biophysical features
of the Earth. What is driving the destruction is neoclassical economics
which glorifies human creativity and produces capacity while
externalizing the natural capital and services. Politicians and business
people ignore the warnings of scientists to pursue a suicidal agenda.
Since 1969 David Suzuki Ph.D has been a full Professor at the
University of British Columbia in Vancouver. He is currently with the
Sustainable Development Research Institute. He was the recipient of the
E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship Award as the "Outstanding Canadian
Research Scientist under the age of 35" from 1969 to 1972. As a
distinguished journalist and broadcaster, he is familiar to television
audiences as the host of CBC's "The Nature of Things" and "A Planet for
the Taking". Dr. Suzuki is a past recipient of UNESCO's Kalinga Prize for
Science, the United Nations Environment Program medal and Global 500. He
is an officer of the Order of Canada and recipient of 11 honorary degrees
in Canada and the United States. Known for his work in support of
Canada's Native people, he lives with his wife, Dr. Tara Cullis, and two
children in Vancouver.
