Just a week ago it was confirmed that marathon will be the newest sport in
the Ontario Summer Games to be held July 19-21 near Kitchener-Waterloo, an
hour west of Toronto.
Participation is limited to athletes 22 and younger. Participation is
limited
to 24 athletes, so we anticipate that there will be competition for the
spots.
It's the first time marathon has participated in these Games since 1983!
The
young paddlers here are generally recruited from XC ski clubs. The upper
body
strength from paddling makes them climb hills better. The experience here is
that it takes two to three years of work to get these
groups of kids up and going. Congratulations are due to Iain Craig for a lot
of the work on this. Iain is Ontario's rep to the MRC.
