June 2003 - "Summer Solstice in Yellowknife"

Well this is going to be astonishgly brief since it only covers one day. I thought I had pictures of Aboriginal Day as well, which was celebrated on the 21st in Yellowknife and in most of the country, but all I can find is pictures from the Solstice.

Every year, the summer solstice in Yellowknife is celebrated in part with Raven Mad Daze, a street festival involving food, music, merchants, activities for kids and more. It starts early evening (if I remember right) and goes through midnight. I went down with my friend Lisa and her family after we had supper at their place. Here's her cute little girl getting her face painted (Lisa and I were next in line):

Once we were properly decorated, we made our way farther down the main street. At the far end of the festivities, we found the merry-go-round along with my friend Martin and his son. Here's Erich enjoying the ride (Lisa's kids were on another part of it).

After a while, Lisa and her family went home because they had some stuff they needed to do for their vacation. I stayed for a while, wandering around greeting people I knew and checking out the scene. I ran into some people I knew from Wekweti too, which was neat!

One of the groups performing was the Yellowknife Bluegrass Review. I know several of the musicians so I took a picture of them while I was listening to their music. I think I should know all of their names, but I can't remember one or two of them. In any case, it was good to hear them and it's nice seeing familiar faces on the stage.

By late evening, I'd seen just about everything I wanted to see and I'd visited a few sales at local merchants. I thought about staying later, but I had no particular reason to do so. It wasn't until the next day that I realized I'd been home and not paying any attention at midnight of the longest day of the year. Oops!
