This short piece definitively
links World Bank/IMF policies and practices with repressive
militaries, and brutal human rights abuses. As this document
demonstrates, these abuses are not just ancient history--the Bank
and the Fund are currently engaging in projects and practices
that bolster repressive regimes, and condone (if not encourage)
abuses against innocents worldwide.

The indigenous people of Chiapas
have been subjected to five centuries of "structural
adjustment". The Zapatista rebellion that was launched in
1994 has become a source of inspiration to people all over the

such as: What exactly is Neoliberalism? Why do countries pursue
"free trade" at all costs? Why is the WTO so important
to the people who established it? And, what are the possibilities
for transforming a destructive economic system that is bent on
growth for its own sake?

My friend Mez is getting on a
bus to Washington, D.C., on Saturday. I asked him why, and he
said with all this intensity: "Look, I missed Seattle.
There's no way I'm missing Washington."
I've seen people speak with that kind of unrestrained longing
before, but the object of their affection was usually a muddy
music festival where Beck shares a stage with the Beastie
Boys, or a short-run New York play such as The Vagina
Monologues.
